SUITABLE ENCLOSURES

Choosing the right enclosure for your hamster is crucial for their well-being. When making your decision, consider factors such as floorspace, whether your hamster is a chewer and space available for burrowing. With the right enclosure your hamster will thrive.

MINIMUMS

It's important to remember that not every hamster will be satisfied with the minimum and often require a larger enclosure, wheel or additional enrichment above the norm. Minimums are just that, the bare minimum you can ethically supply your hamster and you should always strive to exceed this if you can.

FLOORSPACE

Your enclosure must be at least 100 x 50cm / 5000cm2 of floorspace.

5000cm2 must be one continuous space. Levels or connected cages do not count towards the minimum floorspace.

BEDDING DEPTH

Your enclosure must be tall enough for a species appropriate wheel and 8" of bedding. This usually means a cage height of 50cm tall as a minimum.

If your cage has a shallow base you can use perspex, grass mats or cardboard to increase bedding depth.

SAFETY

Make sure your enclosure is secure from other pets or young children in the home.

Your enclosure must have a secure lid.

Ensure your enclosure has a fully meshed lid to allow enough air circulation.

ENVIRONMENT

Place your enclosure in a quiet area of the home away from TVs and sound systems.

Make sure your enclosure is not in front of any used radiators or draughty windows. Also ensure your hamster experiences natural day and night cycles each day.
