EXERCISE
HAMSTER WHEELS AND PLAYTIME

Studies of wild hamsters have seen them cover vast distances to forage for food and water every single night. Whilst we will never be able to recreate their natural experience it's important we offer our hamsters the opportunity to run and explore in the safest and most enriching way possible.

EXERCISE DO'S

Ensure your wheel meets the minimum size recommended by species.

Syrian : 28cm+

Hybrid Dwarf : 20cm+

Roborovski : 20cm+

Chinese Dwarf : 28cm+

Free roam time is sometimes an essential part of owning a hamster. Section off a secure area of the home or use a pop up play pen to offer safe time out of the enclosure.

Offer an upright wheel with a flat, smooth running surface. There should be no ridges or holes that could damage your hamsters feet.

EXERCISE DONT'S

Flying saucers should not be used as they do not allow your hamster to run on a straight angle and can cause spinal curvature.

Exercise balls are unsafe for many reasons. They cut off your hamsters natural sense of smell, they easily break and you could have an escaped hamster and the small vent holes are the perfect size for trapping hamster toes.

Do not use a mesh wheel as this could trap and break your hamsters feet/legs.

MINIMUMS

It's important to remember that not every hamster will be satisfied with the minimum and often require a larger enclosure, wheel or additional enrichment above the norm. Minimums are just that, the bare minimum you can ethically supply your hamster and you should always strive to exceed this if you can.
