HAMSTER DIET

Diet can be a really tricky topic to navigate and there are many varying opinions within the hamster community about what the best diet is. We will broadly cover suitable staple feeds, healthy snacks and feeding schedules below to help guide you.

MAIN FOOD MIX

There are four main questions to ask yourself when looking at your hamsters staple diet. Is it species specific, does it have a high quantity of whole ingredients, nutritionally is it roughly within the right limits (15-18% Protein, 6-12% Fat, 10-15% Fibre) and is it free from dyes or additives. If the answer to all these questions is yes, the chances are you are on the right track with the food you have chosen.

Due to the complexities of finding a safe food mix there are only a few seed mixes we can recommend with full confidence.

The food mixes suggested below will recommend a feeding schedule and we will also advise you of this for the specific hamster you are looking to adopt.

HAMSTER SAFE SPRAYS AND FORAGE

As well as being a natural addition to your hamsters diet, sprays also offer enrichment and ground cover. We suggest using a variety of sprays in your enclosure.

Leaf and floral forage not only smells and looks gorgeous in your enclosure but it offers an opportunity for enrichment as your hamster digs through to find food hidden amongst the forage. Lots of hamsters also love to have a nibble on the forage itself.

HAMSTER SAFE TREATS

With so many rodent businesses popping up around the country there is an abundance of treat options now available for your hamster. Treat's should always be fed in moderation and access should be limited in conjunction with any weight gain you see from your hamster.

Here are some of our tried and tested favourite snacks. An easy option is to visit the health food aisle of a supermarket where you will be able to pick up things like sunflower hearts, flax seeds or pine nuts. Try to opt for natural snacks that don't contain food colourings or additives.

FRESH VEGETABLES, HERBS AND FRUITS

Fresh foods make a great natural addition to your hamsters feeding routine. We suggest adding around 1-2 pieces of fresh vegetables to their diet every 2-3 days. The portion should be fairly small, around the size of a 5 pence piece and we suggest chopping this into smaller bits to serve in case your hamster takes this to their nest and doesn't finish it.

Some of our favourites are broccoli, cucumber, radish, peas, spinach and rocket.

If you have a dwarf species it's important to limit the amount of sugary foods they consume so fruit and high sugar vegetables are best avoided. Syrians can have these as a rare treat.
